After predicting AL awards, NL awards, AL standings and NL standings, the At Home Plate writers get together one more time to forecast the World Series winner, one crazy thing that is going to happen in 2009 and what they personally are looking forward to this season. CRAZY PREDICTIONS
JUSTIN: Cubs lose World Series on error in bottom of the ninth.
Bonds in uniform again. That would certainly be a surprise.
MATT: 2009 will see the first 8-figure amateur draft signing bonus – to Steven Strasburg.
ROB: Barry Bonds will be signed by either Oakland or Seattle and will make a difference in the team’s run towards the playoffs. Notice I did not say whether the difference would be good or bad!
ZACH: Someone will bomb 60 home runs? I don’t know who….yet.
TONY: The Chicago Cubs win the World Series. Folks, you can’t get much crazier than that.
DANIEL: The Royals actually are respectable this season.
BJOERN: Curt Schilling will sign with the Cubs in August and lead them to their first world series in 101 years.
WHAT OUR WRITERS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO
JUSTIN: You can't hear yourself think here at Wrigley Field… Cubs leading 6 to 5, it's the bottom of the ninth and the Cubs are one strike away from ending one hundred and one years of futility… Jeter takes his lead off second base, it's two and two to Rodriguez… Marmol's pitch… and he pops it up! A towering pop-up just behind third base, and Ramirez is under it, and he dropped it! He dropped it! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
ROBERT: Opening Day at Dodger Stadium (28th consecutive home opener for me).
MATT: Ken Griffey’s first home at bat of 2009…sue me, I’m sentimental. Despite my concerns that his return will tarnish his Mariner legacy, there’s no denying that he means a lot to me as a fan of the game and that seeing him in a Mariner uniform again will be the highlight of the year for me.
ROB: I cant wait to see the 80th All Star game this year which will be held in St. Louis for the first time in over 40 years. I am sure they will have some of the old Cardinal greats like Brock, Gibson and Musial; who knows, if they ask Keith Hernandez to show up, maybe he will bring Jerry Seinfeld. All in all, it is one of the top five baseball towns in the history of the game; at least in my opinion. Additionally, as much as I despise the Yanks, I am excited to see the opening game at the new Yankee Stadium, isn’t everyone?
ZACH: Enjoying the Phillies quest to repeat.
TONY: The return of Alex Rodriguez - the treatment he gets from fans – and maybe even players – will be nasty, especially in Boston. And Texas. And Seattle.
DANIEL: The opportunity to see major league baseball once again.
BJOERN: I’m looking forward to watching the games in high definition over the internet. I remember when I started watching MLB games here in Germany in 2003. The quality was so low, you couldn’t see the ball during its flight. This year, I may see the curled eyelashes of A-Rod. Ah, technology.
