Ratchet Them Up:

Masa Kobayshi (CL, Indians): Has taken over from Joe Borowski as the team’s closer.   It could however end up being a closer by committee.

Austin Kearns (OF, Nationals):  Returned to the team after 15 days on the DL.

Paul Konerko (DH/1B, White Sox):  Will return next week from the DL.

Manny Corpas (RP, Rockies):  With all the rumors swirling about the interest in Brian Fuentes, Corpas may soon have a chance to win the closer role back in Colorado.  Certainly based on the contract the Rox gave him he’ll be given the first shot at it.

Ian Snell (SP, Pirates):  Is due to return from the DL this week.  Considering how he’s pitched in 2008 that may or may not be a good thing.

Nomar Garciaparra (3B, Dodgers):
Returned from the DL and went 2-4 in his first game back.  If you still believe in Nomar you might as well plug him in.

Ratchet Them Down:

Matt Capps (CL, Pirates):  Will miss at least two months but will not need surgery on his shoulder.

Joe Borowski (CL, Indians):  Lost the closer’s job and was designated for assignment by the Indians.  Presumably that puts a cap on his career with the Tribe.

Johnny Damon (OF, Yankees):
Seems to be headed to the DL after injuring his left shoulder diving for a ball on Thursday

Juan Pierre (OF, Dodgers):  Will miss 4-6 weeks with a strained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Troy Tulowitzki (SS, Rockies):
Was placed on the 15 day DL, this time with a cut on his right hand, he suffered the injury when pounding a bat down and the bat shattered cutting him and requiring stitches.

Roy Oswalt (SP, Astros):  Is suffering significant pain in his strained left hip and seems likely to miss some time. He may be back Friday, at the earliest.

Bobby Crosby (SS, A’s):  Was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained left hamstring.

Tom Gorzelanny (SP, Pirates):
Was optioned to AAA to try to right his ship.  It might be a while before he is back.

Joaquin Benoit (SP, Rangers):
Was placed on the DL with right shoulder inflammation.

Todd Helton (1B, Rockies):  Was placed on the DL with a sore back.  It is not considered to be serious.

Michael Barrett (C, Padres):
Will miss at least six weeks after taking a foul ball in the face fracturing his skull.

Luis Castillo (2B, Mets):  Was placed on the DL with a strained hip flexor.

Eric Byrnes (OF, D’Backs):  Was placed back on the DL and could undergo season ending surgery for his ailing hamstring.

Rafael Furcal (SS, Dodgers):  Has had back surgery and could miss 8-10 weeks.  Likely he’s done for the year.

Jeff Francis (SP,Rockies):
Was placed on the 15 day DL with shoulder inflammation.

Clayton Kershaw (SP, Dodgers):
Was returned to AAA after struggling at the major league level.

Eric Chavez (3B, A’s):
Was placed on the 15 day DL with a sore shoulder.

Alex Gonzalez (SS, Reds):
Is done for the season following ankle surgery.

Troy Percival (CL, Rays):
Was placed on the 15 day DL with a sore left hamstring.  His job is in jeopardy as his durability down the stretch is seriously being questioned.

Brett Myers (SP, Phillies):
Was demoted to AAA to try to figure out his pitching woes.

Alex Cintron (SS, Orioles):
Was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained left hamstring.

Chad Cordero (CL, Nationals):
Will not return this season due to a torn labrum in his shoulder which has not responded to treatment.  He will undergo surgery to repair it.
